I am a charismatic, self-driven and hard-working student, demonstrated through my Masters course where I graduated with a Distinction in Data Science, and my undergraduate course where I graduated with a first class degree in Computational Mathematics, being rewarded the Ede and Ravenscroft award and Departmental Achievement Prize for my academic success.

Taking up amateur boxing at university, I have become more confident in learning new skills outside of my comfort zone. This has translated directly into my work, where I now challenge myself further.

Hello! My name is Amanda and I’m a recent M.S. graduate of the University of Virginia School of Data Science. Prior to the program, I attended the University of Michigan, where I graduated with high honors in economics and a minor in mathematics, studied Mandarin in Beijing, interned for the Ministry of Economic Development in Albania, trained and competed internationally in taekwondo, and held various jobs including as a research assistant and data visualization consultant. In my free time, I enjoy adventure sports, reading, and publishing articles to Medium's Towards Data Science publication.

The spark in me for programming ignited the first time a teacher taught me how to use my knowledge of matrix algebra to populate and loop through a vector. It was stoked every time I picked up a new language (R, Python, SQL, C++, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MATLAB) and molded the code for projects in physics, UX/UI design, machine-learning, NLP, or geospatial data visualization, to name a few. Every time I jumped from my seat, ecstatic that a null hypothesis could be rejected or my confusion matrix had a particularly low false positive rate, my passion for data science was stoked further.

My qualitative skills include written and oral communication, leadership, creative problem-solving, and team management. I’m excited to opportunities that will help me further hone my skills with data science and creative analysis. Thanks for reading about me today!

Dr. Tim Scarfe started/runs the highly successful Machine Learning Street Talk YouTube channel and podcast with collaborators Dr. Yannic Kilcher (who runs the most successful ML paper review channel on YT) and MIT Doctor of Philosophy Keith Duggar, we have had some extremely well-known guests i.e. professor Yann LeCun, professor Michael Bronstein, professor Karl Friston, Dr. Ben Goertzel, Jeff Hawkins, prof. Melanie Mitchell, professor Max Welling, Francois Chollet, professor Kenneth Stanley, professor Gary Marcus and professor Pedro Domingos. In the first year we got 300K views on YouTube and 100K listens on the podcast.

Tim has a Ph.D in machine learning, a first-class degree in computer science and two decades of experience in software engineering, entrepreneurship and the cloud. Tim is currently the Chief Data Scientist at bp and the custodian of bp’s AI technology strategy and is cultivating strategy, people, process and technology around AI. He was a principal software/machine learning engineer at Microsoft and was awarded the highly coveted ML community champion (out of >6000 members) title there in 2018/19. He travelled the world building and leading teams of data scientists and ML engineers working on ML projects.

Tim is an engineer and computer scientist at heart but has a serious case of enterpreneurship-itus! He co-founded two software companies; Dot Net Solutions (New Signature) where Tim was CTO and director - FY2015+19 Microsoft UK partner of the year and Trade Mark Direct (largest trade mark registrar in the UK by volume of registrations). Tim is also the CEO of Myrge, a software code-review-as-a-service business which he started in 2021 -- a bp incubated company. Tim has already hired his first 5 engineers for Myrge and is looking to hire more (especially from FAANG).

    • Current company: Ilika plc

In August 2018 I joined Ilika, undertaking data science, machine learning and developing data analysis tools (within a MATLAB environment) to assist in solid-state battery development.

In January 2017 I joined NeevesTECH, a start-up in its infancy, as a project engineer. Being a start-up, my role was extremely wide in scope: there were not enough members for each person to get deep into their own technical field, rather, we needed to be proficient across many disciplines. As a result, I worked on business development, marketing, data management, communication protocols, 3D printing and vacuum systems, among other things, to validate and develop our first product offering.

For the three years prior to joining NeevesTECH, whilst at e2v, I had predominantly been working with optics characterisation systems (reflectivity, transmission and absorption) for PVD thin film deposition systems. The work I carried out with the optical systems included: verification that the system was working, measurements using the systems and subsequent analysis & reporting of the measurements. On top of that, I developed many automated scripts in excel (vba) to do data processing & analysis: so that any time-consuming manual data handling was minimised.

My work to-date is founded upon a good grasp of the languages and concepts used in many different scientific areas, acquired due to having completed modules in chemistry, physics, electronic engineering, biochemistry and material sciences as an undergrad. I then specialized in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics for my Masters.
